Letter to parents of players in F & P junior teams:

Dear Parents,

You have to be aware that you cannot just leave the ground at the end of a game with your youngster, landing the hard pressed match manager to clear up the mess left by the teams playing (both home and away teams).

The hard pressed manager is a volunteer who has given up his/her time to organising a game for your youngster's benefit. He or she has enough to do with the logistics of getting a team of players on the ground, getting the changing rooms ready to accept the incoming team, organising umpires, scoring, watching out for youngsters misbehaving or acting dangerously, administering half-time drinks and seeing the opposition off, without also having to spend time after the game clearing out the changing rooms left in an unholy mess by the departing players.

It's lonely on your own as the light fades clearing up muck and rubbish left by the people you have done so much to help.

Why is cleaning up needed?

Why not leave the changing rooms, pavilion and front area in a muck?

Because basic human standards of decency require people to do their best to leave facilities clean and tidy ready for the next game, which is likely to be playing the next day.

To quote Paul Bachelor (Ground Officer) after a recent junior evening game:

"I spend many hours on the ground and, if I had not checked when I did, this mess would have greeted our first team and guests tomorrow."

So, Parents, think before "just dropping off" your youngster at the ground and "just collecting him/her" after the game as your tyres screech off in an early getaway.

Think once.

Think twice.

Think muck and rubbish.

Think basic human cleanliness and decency.

Yours sincerely,

Marvin Straightjacket

Urgent call for help

Our U11 and U13 set-ups are severely short of adult assistance from parents, particularly at practice sessions.

Lyndon Prendergast is doing the best he can but parents with boys and girls who play in junior matches or attend practice at the club need to make themselves known to the applicable team manager (Lyndon Prendergast, Jane Billing and Graham Grey) as able and willing to be on-site assisting with these groups of youngsters.

Yes, many have brothers or sisters who need to be taken elsewhere at the same time as cricket is going on. But nonetheless just dropping your youngster off and collecting at the end puts a big strain on the adult personnel running games or assisting with practice.

We need you.

And, if your youngster is to have the privilege of playing and learning cricket at Horse Race Lane, you need us.

Bite the bullet and email Lyndon now on lyndon.prendergasr@airbus.com with your offer to help out.

How to judge the shot to play
The batsman's job is to score as many runs as possible. But to build an innings, a batsman needs sound judgement to work out which deliveries to defend, leave or score off.

Even top class batsmen give their wicket away because of poor shot selection, so it's not an easy science.

The batsman has approximately 12 shots to choose from either side of the wicket. So stroke selection depends on the line, length and speed of a delivery.
There are three main lines:

Off stump and outside
Middle stump
Leg stump and outside
And there are five main lengths of delivery:

Bouncer/long hop
Short of a length
Good length
Full length/half volley
Full toss

For the best chance of building an innings, a batsman needs to move their feet backwards or forwards to get into the best position to play a stroke.

BACK FOOT STROKES
A shorter length delivery will usually be played on the back foot. The main back foot shots are:

Hook shot
Pull shot
Square cut
Back defence

The hook, pull and square cut are cross-batted shots where the arms are fully extended for maximum power.

The hook and pull are usually played to deliveries on middle and leg stump, while the square cut is played to a ball outside off stump.

The leg glance and drive can also be played on the back foot.

FRONT FOOT STROKES
A fuller length delivery will normally be played on the front foot.

The main front foot shots are:

Off drive
Straight drive
On drive
Sweep shot
Forward defence

The off and straight drive are played to deliveries which pitch on off stump and outside, while the on drive is played to a ball pitching around leg stump.

The sweep shot is played to a ball from a spinner pitching around leg stump and outside.
The leg glance can also be played off the front foot.

YOUTH ORGANISOR'S REPORT 2005

The Final NSYCL tables indicate what a successful year the U11s and U13s had.

[tables]

U13s
This turned out to be a controversial season (another one!) that unfortunately overshadowed some brilliant performances by the players.

We lost the semi final of the cup, against Blagdon, because of an overage player (with the full sanction of the NSYCL) and our final crucial league match, against Nailsea, because of a ringer. Then, because of having to play so many matches during the season, the ‘play off’ decider (again against Nailsea) could not be rearranged and our 3 county players were all unavailable. We lost narrowly.

There were tremendous individual performances (see averages and performances) but unfortunately too many matches against poor opposition. We probably only had half a dozen competitive matches all season. It is also now becoming the ‘norm’ for weak sides to bat 1st if they win the toss – presumably to avoid the embarrassment of losing by a considerable margin. This results in considerable frustration for all concerned.

I would especially like to thank Paul for preparing excellent wickets, Jane for scoring, Jane/Dawn for providing teas, and Jane/Rod for organising the play off match in my absence

U11s
I’m sure that Jane will provide her own report but I would like to congratulate her on her efforts. She had a very young team and managed them well. She also had to endure a ridiculous decision by the NSYCL whereby Cleeve were not compelled to replay their match – this effectively ensured that her team could not win the league. Thanks also to Dick for, at least, attempting to get Cleeve to see some sense.

Generally
As you are aware I have now stepped down from all management and committee roles. In my absence I would appreciate the following receiving some form of presentation/trophies for their efforts this season

U13 Best Bowler Tom Marsh (18 wickets, av 7.44)
Best Batsman Charlie Walker (492 runs, av 70.29)
Best All-rounder James Laycock (258 runs, 7 wickets)

U11 Best Bowler )
Best Batsman ) Jane to advise
Best All-rounder )

Next season
There is, without doubt, enough interest to form an u15 squad for next season. All you need to do is to find a manager! I do not believe that any of the parents would be interested – however I will give all my support to anyone that is nominated.

I believe that Jane is happy to continue with running the u11’s. Support for an u13’s team would have to be canvassed (I did not have any u12’s in my squad this season and I think Jane only had a couple of u11’s that would move up) and a manager found.

Consideration should be given to leaving the NSYCL.

Good luck to all in the future.

Mark Walker

Former F & P player Will Rudge
plays today in a 3 day game for Gloucestershire against Bangladesh A.

It's good to see success at professional level for Will Rudge, a key member of the Failand & Portbury Under 15 team that reached the last 16 of the Sun Life National U15 knock-out cup in 1997.

His first day's bowling figures are a creditable 5-2-16-0 coming on first change. Well done Will!

Other members of that 1997 side playing regularly for Failand & Portbury CC senior sides are: George Humphreys (c), Hugo Hanchet, Paul Teasdale, Ed Humphreys and Alex Chapman.

Despite smashing 102 for 3 and declaring after 12 overs, in an attempt to get result against Congresbury, F&P U13s were still thwarted by the weather.
Sam Warren's brilliant 40, together with Rory King's 22 and Charlie Walker's 15 paved the way for a result. Unfortunately when Rory 'no spikes' King ended up at the batsman's end, before his 1st ball of Congresbury's reply did, both teams agreed that enough was enough.
Another match is to be re-arranged in a season that is already looking like a organiser's nighmare.
Next round of the cup, on 15th May, is confirmed as being against Congresbury.

New safety guidance on the wearing of cricket helmets by young players

The England and Wales Cricket Board has issued new safety guidance on the wearing of cricket helmets by young players. It is recommended that a helmet is worn by young players when batting and when standing up to the stumps when keeping wicket against a hard cricket ball in matches and in practice. A young player should not be allowed to bat or to stand up to the stumps when keeping wicket without a helmet against a hard ball except with written parental consent. Coaches, teachers, managers and umpires should always ensure that a young player wears a helmet if this written parental consent has not been received. Players should regard a helmet with a faceguard as a normal item of protective equipment when batting against a hard ball, together with pads, gloves
and, for boys, an abdominal protector (box). There is a British Standard (BS7928:1998) for cricket helmets and it is in the best interests of players to ensure that their helmet confirms to this standard.

The ECB is recommending that this guidance is followed by all players up to the age of 18. It applies to young players in adult cricket as well as to all junior cricket played with a hard cricket ball.

The ECB is requesting that the new guidance is communicated to the parents or guardians of all young players through clubs and schools, and that parental consent is always obtained before young players are allowed to bat or stand up to the stumps when keeping wicket against a hard ball without wearing a helmet.
